Employers
The Sex Discrimination Act (1984) was amended in 2022 to impose a legal obligation on business and organisations to take proactive and meaningful action to prevent sex-based harassment in the workplace. This is especially important in rural and remote areas as your workers are constantly exposed to the same social circles and do not have the ability to avoid, or access safe spaces, away from their harasser/s.
All organisations and businesses in Australia, regardless of size or resources, that have obligations under the Sex Discrimination Act must meet the positive duty. This includes sole-traders and the self-employed.
Often, it can be challenging to know how to meet these obligations and begin to target sexual violence within these areas. Down Red Roads is working to build area-specific templates and guidelines to implement within the workplace, as well as provide resources to use within your inductions, and training in recognising and responding to sexual harassment and assault.
